Angel Fire, New Mexico

Angel Fire is a small ski town just south of Eagle Nest and west of Philmont Scout Ranch. Sitting at 8,882 ft, Angel Fire got its name from the Moache Utes. Seeing vibrant tongues of red and orange licking the morning sky, one of the elders claimed it was the “fire of the gods”. Later Franciscan Friars interpreted “fire of the gods” as “the place of the fire of the angel”. The featured photos are from a campground just outside the city in an amazing old growth Ponderosa Pine forest. These giants can grow to be over 200 feet tall and have more than a 20 foot circumference.
